The various immunology laboratories at UMC Utrecht, including the Laboratory of Experimental Cardiology, have been virtually joined together to form one laboratory. The purpose of having just 1 TIL is to improve knowledge exchange, efficiency and increasing the scope for new investments and eventually to exemplary research results.

How do we measure safety in heart surgery and how do we compare safety between different heart surgery clinics? PhD research performed at the DH&L shows that the database of the Netherlands Society of Thoracic Surgery is essential in this process. This shows the importance of comparing the safety of different heart surgery clinics to the national average. Since a large proportion of deaths occur after discharge from the hospital, it is advisable that the safety of heart surgery is measured by the death rate in the 120 days after surgery.

The UMC Utrecht is accredited according to the Joint Commission International (JCI). This shows that the efforts of the DH&L to improve its care, research education processes, and the support functions for all these three core functions are appreciated.
