Researchers at the Department of Cardiology have received a valorization grant from the BioMedical Materials program (BMM) for research investigating cardiac regenerative therapy, which can be used in patients with heart failure. The project involves injecting stem cells or factors derived from stem cells into the area around the infarct to limit necrosis of myocardial cells and to form new blood vessels. One of the remaining issues with cardiac regenerative therapy is the accuracy of establishing the injection site around the infarct. The Department has now developed a technique that uses MRI to outline the exact area of the infarct. The valorization grant enables the investigators to further develop their image-driven injection technique and to offer a growing group of heart failure patients improved therapy.
